""Use GIT instead of SVN""
I have been using SVN for several years, but gradually switches to GIT recently. GIT is an decentralized version control system, meaning every user have a complete local copy of the whole repository. He can commit more frequently, including more incremental changes, without disturbing other a lot.
"" emca org-mode is highly recommended""
emacs org-mode provides an convenient environment for note taking, scheduling, outliing, literal programming, and drafting of papers.

Thank you for these suggestions. Regarding SVN versus GIT, I find that for novice users, the two layers of indirection in GIT can be confusing. For a project involving primarily a single individual, SVN is probably sufficient.
