MSE is perhaps not the same as variablity.

It seems the authors have equated MSE with variability. If these two constructs were the same, then there is no justification for the use of MSE as a dependent variable in this paper, because the frequency-specific measure of the coefficient of variation of the EEG could just as well have been used (if variability is the real thing of interest).

Instead of equating MSE with variability, it would have been more appropriate to describe MSE as a measure of complexity, which is the balance between THE POTENTIAL for ordered and random states within a given system. Although to equate variability with MSE might make it simple for the reader to understand, it does not do justice to why this paper is truly interesting.
