Response to suggestions by dalloliogm

Dalloliogm made some constructive comments with his rating of this editorial. As we are unable to comment there, I thought it might be useful to respond here.

Dalloliogm said:

"...I would have enjoyed an higher number of references to uses of wikipedia or wikis by the scientific community, and links to how to get started with editing wikipedia."

We agree a "get started guide" we be helpful. We therefore wrote some basic training pages on Wikipedia, to help scientists make their first edit:

Dalloliogm also said:

"...For me the biggest bottleneck in editing scientific articles in wikipedia is the need to learn the syntax and get used to the custom extensions used to describe scientific entries. For example, I don't know how to cite an article by its pubmed id or how to introduce informations on a protein."

We agree. The syntax for citing journal articles is the most challenging aspect for beginners. We would like to direct you to two tools that will greatly assist in formatting citations using a PubMed ID (or other identifier):

The Universal Reference Formatter: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

The Wikipedia template filler: http://diberri.dyndns.org...

Finally, Dalloliogm said:

"...you could have added some examples of the best scientific entries in wikipedia."

We direct you to the following link, which lists the very best ("Featured") biology articles in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

We hope these links help new Wikipedia editors, and are happy to provide more links on request.

Further to my earlier comments, the URL's of the PubMed ID formatting tools, for easy formatting of citations, have changed:

The Wikipedia Template Filler: http://diberri.crabdance....

The Citation Template Generator: http://toolserver.org/~ho...
